Keynote Speaker Informs and Challenges

Tom Gillaspy, Minnesota state demographer for many years, gave the keynote presentation at our Fall Forum that was both informative and challenging. He began by telling the audience that we are headed for a “new normal” in our county, state and country. Our demographics are changing and current structures will need to change and adapt to new realities. He noted that the next one-to-two decades will be important times as change progresses. What are some of the trends that will affect society in the near future? Here Gillaspy noted a prominent one—the aging of our population. In roughly the next ten years, the over-65 population will exceed the school age population. He pointed out that this trend will impact many other things.
